University of the Virgin Islands is excited to be hosting its Annual Afternoon on the Green. The event will take place on March 3rd, from 12:15 until 2 pm on the Herman E. Moore golf course on St. Thomas. The theme this year for Afternoon on the Green is “A burst of Culture Fun & Food at Afternoon” and it will include many entertainment choices, activities, and other activities. It is a well-known fundraising event to support scholarships for students. Also, it provides an occasion for local talent and culture to be celebrated.
Kyza A. Calwood, Ph.D. has been appointed the chairman of the Event Planning Committee. She declared “Let’s be determined to achieve a higher standard each year.” It’s a pleasure having the chance to get together in person and we look forward to meeting everyone this Sunday. On the Main Stage , we will be featuring local legends that include Cool Session Brass, a well-known favorite with all of the constituents as well as a symbol for Caribbean skill. Shaw HP from Love City (St. John), will also be on the stage. Other entertainments include dancers as well as school groups from every walk of life. This includes both the youth and adult groups. There is a lot of anticipation that we present the scheduled programs for this year’s opening Ceremony starting at p.m. with remarks from UVI President David Hall. The Ulla F. Muller Elementary School’s Phantastic Panthers Dance team and Cheer team will be dancing at 3:30 p.m.; St. John Dancers will perform at 2.30 p.m.; Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers will be performing around 2:00 p.m. Shaw HP will present at 5:00 p.m.; UVI Royalty and other special performances are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Cool Session brass starts at 7:00 p.m.
The Reichhold Center, Happy Times Entertainment as well as the V.I. National Guard have taken great efforts to make sure that guests have fun by providing a range of fun and entertainment activities that are specifically tailored to their needs. The huge dominoes are available as well as mini-golf. There’s also Face painting, bounce houses and yard games. There are carnival headpiece demonstrations by Anthony Felix as well as Boy Scout tent building demonstrations. In addition there will be the V.I. Children’s Museum will be at hand to provide additional entertainment for kids of all ages. They are constantly striving to meet expectations and develop distinct events with each new edition.
The bubbles’ scientific experimentation can be enjoyed by teens to view interactive displays of and the University of the Virgin Islands’s academic program in the Tent for Academics. Foodies should set up their lawn chairs close to the food tent to enjoy an assortment of tasty dishes like pick-up saltfish and pumpkin fritters, barbecue chicken as well as fish *****, stewed chicken kallaloo, and various sides such as vegan and Ital options. An additional tent will be embellished with cakes, tarts, sweet breads and more confections created by the bakers at home as well as local chefs. Additionally, it is important to not overlook the native drink table and the Chef’s Corner.
Afternoon on the Green will include cooking demonstrations, as well as an opportunity to vote for your favorite food. All proceeds from the day will go towards the Edd Thomas Volunteer Scholarship, that is given to two seniors in high school who attend Charlotte Amalie High School and Ivanna.
