The 17th Annual African-American Film Festival is proudly hosted by community leaders from the local area in the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. The festival will be held in the months of January, February and March of this year. James Drayton (a former West Palm Beach commissioner , and a active advocate for equality rights and fairness) created the festival. This festival is a celebration of African American culture and race relationsand recognizes African American artists with groundbreaking film productions. An experienced person hosts each night’s panel discussion, and gives an overview of the film’s subject.
Come join us on January 1st at 2:45 pm for the premier of the critically acclaimed film A Raisin in the Sun (directed by Daniel Petrie). The film features Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil and is about those who are the Youngers (an African American family living together in the same Chicago apartment) in their quest to determine what they should take care of their huge insurance payouts following the death of their patriarch. TreaAndrea Russworm (PhD.) is the moderator. an open discussion panel with the public and will feature William Nix, Thomas Parham, and Avery Sommers.
On March 3rd at 2:00 pm, at 2:00 pm on March 3. Terri Francis will moderate an audience featuring Eduardo Culmer Jr., Breion Moss, and Dwayne. The documentary by Ava Duvernay, TH is the topic of discussion. The documentary examines the history of America’s of inequalities racial and explores the reasons African Americans are so heavily featured in prisons. It will also discuss John Singleton’s film Poetic Justice. In it two mismatched characters Justice and Lucky (Tupac) Shakur Justice as well as Lucky (Tupac) Shakur – embark on a road trip that is not their own to South Central Los Angeles, the state of California, up to Oakland.
NALES Film Festival exposes the roots of race discrimination. Nadine White Boyd is an attorney. is the moderator as well Alexis Lockhart, Reverend Kevin Jones and James Venable will serve as panelists. An evening reception with food and drinks inside the lobby of the Rinker Playhouse will be held prior to the event. James Drayton and AnEta Selwell have hosted events in the past. They have all thoroughly researched before deciding to curate an assortment of movies that are relevant and could serve as catalysts for discussions in the community. A lot of these films have a nostalgic feel and are among their finest.
American Film Festival is proud to be presenting with support of WLRN Public Media, and volunteers from Kappa Upsilon Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The screenings will be available for reduced tickets for students and teachers. TreaAndrea Russworm, PhD, is a multidisciplinary media scholar with a specialization in video and digital media games.
Terri Francis holds the position of Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts, as well as an Associate Dean for Inclusion as well as Outreach. She is currently studying popular genres like Sidney Poitier films, Black mother-daughter melodramas, Black pimp narratives as well as Fat Albert post’s American popular stories.
