In addition, I’m amused by the array of flora beneath my feet, which includes Jerusalem Blue pimpernels, sage and tiny wild orchids. Sometimes, it feels like that I’m walking through a huge salad bowl. Jonathan adds to my experience by telling me stories about the area as well as giving instructions on making plant concoctions.
It is possible to taste some of the most delicious fruits the area has to offer on our walks every day. We were able to find Taverna Moustakas (Stilos) thanks to our insider knowledge. In this place, we can sample many local wines, meze and succulent lamb chops. Walking through Stilos as well as its surroundings One of the most impressive sights is a fifth-century BC Hellenistic bridge which has stood the years. When we travel through the fields, we will discover even more of the beauty in the area, like wild asparagus and cyclamen, the final destination is towards the tiny town of Maza.
We arrive at the magnificent cathedral of St. Nicholas, which is adorned with exquisite frescoes designed by Ioannis Pagamenos (a talented Cretan artist from the late th century). After taking the time to stroll around in an olive grove, we finally reach the destination. Jonathan and Myriam are friendly hosts and provide unforgettable meals they create for us. After a brief break, we embark on a long trek through the Omalos plateau following the ancient Venetian paths. We’re surrounded by a vast expanse of empty plains and cliffs that have goats all about, and we witness majestic buzzards, griffons and other avian species flying high in the skies.

The drive to St. Nicholas church, which was followed by a trek along Venetian pathways on the Omalos plateau were nothing short of spectacular. Jonathan and Myriam were our guides who knew the area and their gracious hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable. This journey will be cherished for many years, from the rough faces of the bird-flying high-flyers to the delicious tasty picnic food and masterful frescoes created by Ioannis Pgomenos.
